Timeline: force3D on entire Timeline?

We caution against using force3D in excess as it can actually degrade performance if over-used. 

 

Why does it degrade performance? I thought setting force3D to true actually improves it? When I tried it I checked the FPS and it seemed higher, while without it FPS dropped.

The performance degradation can be apparent when too many elements are rendered in 3D. It actually takes some time to offload these elements to the GPU and create the layers they go on. There is also a risk of running out of GPU memory.

 

Read this article: http://css-tricks.com/myth-busting-css-animations-vs-javascript/ as it goes into further detail. This problem effects both CSS Animations and JS ones. 

 

If you use the speed test demo in the article and ask Zepto to animate a few hundred elements you will notice a few seconds of lag before the star field is rendered.

 

 

If you are animating just a handful of elements, you will probably be just fine.
