Share Posted August 31, 2022 I added GSAP to my React App. I'm calling GSAP using a useEffect hook. I'm currently receiving an error of "Expected an assignment or function call and instead saw an expression". This is apparently due to a lack of a 'return' statement. Does a return statement need to be added for this GSAP code to run? Or is this due to another issue? import { gsap, ScrollTrigger } from "gsap/all"; gsap.registerPlugin(ScrollTrigger); useEffect(() => { gsap.from(textRef.current, { opacity: 0, duration: 3.3, }), gsap.from(animeRef1.current, { duration: 1.9, y: -20, opacity: 0, }), gsap.from(textRef2.current, { opacity: 0, duration: 3, scrollTrigger: { trigger: textRef2.current, start: "top center", }, }), gsap.from(animeRef3.current, { duration: 1.9, opacity: 0, y: -20, scrollTrigger: { trigger: animeRef3.current, start: "top center", }, }); }, []);
Solution Solution Share Posted August 31, 2022 It's pretty tough to troubleshoot without a minimal demo but I'm confident this has absolutely nothing to do with GSAP. It's something else in your code somewhere. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you put commas between your gsap.from() calls rather than semicolons. If you're still having trouble, please include a minimal demo like a CodePen that clearly shows the problem. Please don't include your whole project. Just some colored <div> elements and the GSAP code is best (avoid frameworks if possible). See if you can recreate the issue with as few dependancies as possible. If not, incrementally add code bit by bit until it breaks. Usually people solve their own issues during this process! If not, then at least we have a reduced test case which greatly increases your chances of getting a relevant answer. Here's a starter CodePen that loads all the plugins. Just click "fork" at the bottom right and make your minimal demo: See the Pen aYYOdN by GreenSock (@GreenSock) on CodePen If you're using something like React/Next/Nuxt/Gatsby or some other framework, you may find CodeSandbox easier to use. Once we see an isolated demo, we'll do our best to jump in and help with your GSAP-specific questions.
Author Share Posted September 1, 2022 The issue was caused by the by the commas after all those closing parentheses, updated to semi-colons
