3d transform inheritance?

My brain has ceased to function and I've apparently forgotten something I used to know how to do.

 

I thought transformStyle:"preserve-3d" caused children to inherit their parents 3d space and it wasn't neccessary to redeclare transformPerspective:var on children. However in the pen below z-axis animation only works if I set transformPerspective:var on the child.?

 

Obviously I haven't set something up right, but I'm blind to whatever it is.
