There is no x property on an element. You need to use getBoundingClientRect.

var mySplitText2 = new SplitText("#quote2", {type:"chars"});
console.log(mySplitText2.chars[0].getBoundingClientRect().left);

Thanks for replying, that has set in the right direction, though there seems to be a discrepancy in the x, y:
